Coxo-femoral articulation (hip joint)

Coxo-femoral articulation (hip joint) • Coxo-femoral articulation is a ball-and-socket joint with the head of the femur fitting into the acetabular fossa made by the cotyloid ligament. • Cotyloid ligament is a fibrous band circulating the acetabular fossa. Transverse ligament is that portion of the cotyloid ligament which crosses the acetabular notch. • The round ligament extends from the sub-pubic groove in the acetabulum to the head of the femur and is intra-articular. In occasional cases this ligament may be small or absent.

Coxo-femoral dislocation in cow
The increased frequency of hip joint or coxo-femoral dislocation in cow is due to: • the shallowness of the acetabulum, • lack of bulky muscle around the joint, • the small, or occasionally absent round ligament • absence of an accessory ligament as in the horse • the awkward gait, • excessive relaxation of pelvic ligaments in advanced pregnancy and with cystic ovaries, • the large size and weight of the abdomen in advanced pregnancy, twin pregnancy, hydrops of fetal membranes.
